Help a mother out

I was talking to my Mom earlier this evening and she told me, rather loudly, that she was running out of blogs to read. In fact, she said that she needed me and dooce to post more often because she just didn't know where else to turn.

Well, readers, I kindly mentioned to my Mom that she should hit up some of the links in my sidebar for some quality reading material. But it got me thinking...What blogs should my Mom be reading? And where can she find them?

There are just so many out there and the Internet can be a scary and overwhelming place (and boring, too). It's not like going to a library where you can judge books by covers and make a selection by browsing the shelves. Like the world of books, in the world of blogs things are hit and miss. For every great blog there are probably fifty horrible ones. Heck, you might even think this blog right here is horrible! In which case, I bid you farewell.

I choose blogs based on links on the blogs that I already read. I'm a big fan of clicking on links and letting the Blogger that I already read and love lead me to things that they read and love and so on. Occasionally I will take a look at recommended links that pop up on my Google Reader. To me it's a bit of a connect-the-dots process. And it can sometimes become quite overwhelming.

How do you find good blogs?

Do you have a search strategy?

Where should my Mom start looking?

And am I missing out on anything?

I find new blogs largely through comments and blogrolls of blogs that I already read. It seems to work.

I think what I need to do is set my Mom up with a reader of some sort, probably Google Reader 'cos that's what I use and know. In the meantime, thanks for the list of links Danielle! And for the input Miss Grace.

Of course, there's always my list of lovely links in the JuJu sidebar to which I am always adding new things.

Ahh, that made me laugh.

I usually do what you do- click around on other people's blog links and hope for something good. Other than that, Wordpress has a random link button that I use now and again, but for some reason it keeps sending me to blogs from Thailand. I think Wordpress wants me to learn Thai or something.

Does you mom know how to speak Thai? If she does I have a ton of links for you.

Thanks, dude!

My Mom doesn't speak Thai, but she does like Thai food so maybe if those blogs have pictures of food they'd work.

I'd get her to comb through the blogrolls of blogs she likes... and look at community blogs like metafilter.com (if no blogs, at least interesting tidbits that'll keep her reading online). some people also really like stumbleupon.com to find stuff.

Thanks Ayesha! Good ideas. Next time I'm visiting my parents I will have to set them up to do these things. She will be spending more time on the Internet than ever before!!!

I scope out other people's links, and read anybody whose comments really make me laugh. And today I noticed a blogroll in the San Francisco Chronicle. Now I'm both wondering why it's there and how I can get on their list.

does she like talk of farts, weiner jokes, unicorns, tina fey showing her bra, and cognitive behavioral therapy?

cause if so, she should read mine.
i dont even need to write my name on this comment..

..you already know.

I was waiting for a comment from you "anonymous"! In fact, I'm surprised that it took you so long.

Clair, you should definitely see about getting your blog on the SF Chronicle's blogroll!

I would log her on to http://delicious.com. I seem to find some amazing things on there. Hell, I found Ayesha on there, before I even knew who Ayesha was, that is how amazing it is.
